Community Education

TCU Community Education offered a DNR Boat and Water Safety class in the TCU pool Saturday, March 14. Kids grade 4 and up and adults were encouraged to attend. The first part of the class was held in the classroom and consisted of the basics of boating safety, rules, regulations and discussions of various boating emergency situations. The students were given a wealth of information regarding boat and water safety, as well as instructions on the steps of how to complete the certification process online. The second half of the class took place in the pool where those emergency situations were actually created and proper safety techniques were used. The “boaters” were able to experience their boat capsizing and learn what practices will keep them afloat and lead to rescue. Participants also tested their own PFD’s (life jackets) and other water-related clothing such as hunting waders etc. This is a “must have” class for anyone who boats or hunts waterfowl! Community Ed. would like to thank DNR officers Brent Ihnen (Waseca), Chris Howe (St. Peter), and Corey Wiebusch (Mankato) for instructing this class and Cabela’s for the use of their duck boat.
